Clothes Manufacturer Mura Is Paying Its Debt

Murska Sobota, 30 January - Slovenia's leading clothes producer, Mura, is the latest case of cost-cutting at the expense of the employees, as the company is planning to sack 1,500 of a total of 5,600 workers in the next few years. Nine hundred of the workers will be retired prematurely. The first 120 Mura employees are expected to be jobless as of February. While Mura generated revenues of nearly SIT 20 billion tolars (90 million euros) in 2000, the company posted a loss of SIT 780 million (3.5 million euros) in the same year. The official figure of last year's loss is not yet known, but is expected to be somewhat lower than a couple of years ago.
