Ljubljana, 28 January - Below is a schedule of events for Thursday, 29 January:

LJUBLJANA - The government is expected to take a vote on the candidacy of Janez Potocnik for Slovenia's first European commissioner, after the Europe minister was put forward by the prime minister last week. (STA)

LJUBLJANA - MPs are expected to finish their January session by debating a bill setting down the cooperation of parliament and government on EU matters and a bill on the protection of the environment, both in first reading. A vote is to be taken on changes to the trade act, and on the appointment of Milan M. Cvikl to the post of president of the Court of Auidt. (STA)

STRASBOURG, France - The law and human rights committee of the Council of Europe is to discuss a report on the outstanding debt of the defunct Slovenian bank Ljubljanska banka to account holders from the former Yugoslav republics, mostly Croatians and Bosnians. The report, compiled by special CoE rapporteur Erik Jurgens, was originally scheduled to be discussed on Tuesday. (STA)

LJUBLJANA/BRDO PRI KRANJU - President of the Canadian Senate Dan Hays is to conclude a two-day visit to Slovenia, meeting with several government officials and MPs.

LJUBLJANA - A delegation of the Turkish parliamentary foreign affairs committee, led by chair Mehmet Duelger, is to meet with several Slovenian MPs and government officials. A statement to the press is scheduled for 11 AM. (STA)

LJUBLJANA - Consultations are to be held between Slovenian and Portuguese foreign ministry officials, chaired by Slovenian State Secretary Andrej Logar and his Portuguese counterpart Costa Neves.

CELJE - At 6 PM, the economy, EU directions and the implementation of environment policy in Slovenia will be the topics of a panel organised by a club of business people, Klub podjetnikov Zlatorog.

LJUBLJANA/CELJE - The second stage of the 6th European Men's Handball Championships is to continue:

SIENA, Italy - The Slovenian basketball club Krka is to take on Montepaschi Siena in the 11th round of Euroleague, group B; at 8.40 PM. (STA)

MARIBOR - A telemark sprint classic competition is to be staged at Maribor's Pohorje, with the first run scheduled at 2 PM and the second run to start at 5 PM. (STA)
