RESS REVIEW FROM SLOVENIA, MARCH 21, 1992

Ljubljana, 21 March - THE SLOVENEC: TRUST - THE FOUNDATION OF LABOUR - By now it has become clear to us that only societies richer than ours can afford more Socialism to a certain extent, while Slovenia at this moment has no choice but to tighten its belt and to cultivate resourcefulness and hard work and to lower the prices considerably in this still too expensive land - wrote Metod Bohinc in a lengthy commentary. It is a great pity that our policy is irrational. The weakened Demos coalition aided by certain people in high places is one of the most important parties in the coalition. Ideological variances and the fear that the Government's policy could take a turn to the right has pushed the possiblility of success into the background. The ruling coalition would be more effective if the unselfish desire for improvement were the permanent trait and the will of all active participants in the governing of this country. This naturally also goes for the opposition, the mass media, the trade unions and others. Trying to pull down the government by hook or by crook will certainly make all future cooperation difficult. The writer reasoned that the ruling coalition's extending an offer of cooperation to some of the left wing parties would present an ideal opportunity to resolve some of the conflicts, but concluded that the goodwill is still lacking for such a step to be made, although it may occur after the elections. Mr. Bohinc also predicted that the parties of the coalition will still be strong then.
