Events commemorating the Battles of the Isonzo

The Isonzo Front, where the last decisive battles took place a hundred years ago, will be commemorated with a series of events this year, from memorial walks, lectures and exhibitions to a battle re-enactment and a joint concert of military orchestras. Below is a list of some of the major events.

12 and 13 May; Tolmin, Kobarid

A joint commemoration in front of the German ossuary in Tolmin and the laying of wreaths by representatives from Germany, Austria, Hungary and Slovenia at the German ossuary in Tolmin, at the Austro-Hungarian cemetery Modrejce pri Tolminu and at the Italian ossuary in Kobarid. The commemoration will be organised by the German War Graves Commission in collaboration with Austrian, Hungarian and Slovenian partners.

26 May; Hudi Log

Unveiling of the memorial to the soldiers of the 21st Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment in Hudi Log in the Miren - Kostanjevica Municipality.

16 June; Kobarid

Opening of the exhibition "1917 - Women in the Streets for Food and Nation", put on by the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana and the Walk of Peace in the Soča Valley Foundation, and the opening of the exhibition Following the War Traces of France Koblar with a Camera, organised by Andreja Koblar Perko and Andrej Perko.

9 July 2017; Kobarid

A concert by military orchestras from several countries, organised by the Slovenian National Committee for the 100th Anniversary of World War I, the ministries of defence and culture, Kobarid Municipality, Kobarid Museum, Walk of Peace in the Soča Valley Foundation and the Soča Valley Development Centre under the patronage of President Borut Pahor.

16 to 20 July 2017; the area of the Isonzo front, Modrejce

The Isonzo Express historical train will bring some 400 Hungarians to the area of the former Isonzo front. A commemoration at the Austro-Hungarian military cemetery in Modrejce near Tolmin on 16 July will be part of their visit.

19 August 2017; Mrzli vrh

A commemoration and mass for the killed soldiers will be organised by the Peski 1915-1917 Tolmin Association in front of the cavern with the altar from 1917, featuring a cultural programme and the laying of wreaths.

August/September 2017

The Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Faculty of Theology at the University of Ljubljana will organise an international conference on peace initiatives during WWI.

17 September 2017; Kolovrat

The Kobarid Museum and the Triglav Cultural Association will organise a re-enactment of the battle of Kolovrat.

21 October 2017, Kobarid

The exhibition Kobarid - Caporetto - Karfreit 1917 will open at the The Kobarid Museum.

October 2017, Bohinjska Bela

The Slovenian Mountain Soldiers Association, Bled Municipality and the Ministry of Defence will unveil a memorial to the killed mountain soldiers in Bohinjska Bela.
