Govt wants to introduce Science Day as holiday

The government would like to introduce a new national holiday, Science Day, to popularise science. The new holiday would be observed on 10 November in honour of Žiga Zois (1747-1819), a celebrated Slovenian Enlightenment figure, and would coincide with UNESCO's World Science Day for Peace and Development.

Defence Ministry signs drone, R&D contracts

The Defence Ministry has signed two contracts with leading Slovenian defence companies for a research-development project for anti-aircraft turrets, and for the purchase of a drone with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear surveillance capacity. It also signed a letter of intent for cooperation in the European project INDY.

Otto Tolnai wins Vilenica Prize

Otto Tolnai, a Hungarian author from the Serbian province of Vojvodina, is the winner of the 2023 Vilenica Prize for Central European literature, to be presented in September at the conclusion of the international literary festival that goes by the same name.

OECD projects 1.5% growth in Slovenia in 2023, 2.6% in 2024

The OECD expects Slovenia's GDP growth to slow to 1.5% this year and increase to 2.6% in 2024. No changes are expected on the tight labour market, which is projected to fuel stronger wage growth and further increase inflationary pressures.
