Access to flood-hit areas no longer restricted

Ljubljana, 23 August - Check points restricting access to flood-ravaged areas have been abolished under a decision Civil Protection Commander Srečko Šestan made on Wednesday.

In a bid to ensure safety and provide uninterrupted support, the check points were set up on 12 August, allowing only authorities and registered volunteers to access the areas worst hit in the early August floods.

The special regime was in place in the areas of Črna na Koroškem, Mežica, Solčava, Luče, Mozirje and Ljubno ob Savinji, because the situation was still dangerous at the time and there was a risk of heavy machinery accidents.

Unauthorised persons or random visitors were not allowed to enter these areas, and volunteers were only allowed to access them if they produced proof of agreement by local communities or relevant humanitarian organisations.

When volunteer aid was in full swing in mid-August, Šestan said that volunteers had been heeding the restrictions.
