Final vote on Yugoslav cultural rights bill postponed due to referendum

Ljubljana, 2 April - The National Assembly debated in third reading on Tuesday a coalition-sponsored bill on cultural rights of members of former Yugoslav national living in Slovenia, but the final vote, initially scheduled for this evening, was postponed due to a motion for a consultative referendum.

The opposition New Slovenia (NSi) filed the referendum motion last month, and the National Assembly is obligated by law to decide on it before voting on the bill.

National Assembly President Urška Klakočar Zupančič explained that the vote cannot go ahead today because the bill and the referendum motion concern the same matter.

The coalition opposes this referendum, and given its majority in parliament, the NSi's motion is unlikely to pass. It is not yet clear when the motion will be put to vote.
