Slovenia commemorating WWII resistance movement

Slovenia is celebrating the Day of Uprising Against Occupation on Saturday, a holiday honouring the resistance against Nazi and Fascist occupation during WWII. A number of ceremonies took place around the country last evening, including the main state ceremony in Črnomelj, and a number of events are planned for today as well.

MPs approve resolutions on prevention of crime and domestic violence

The National Assembly endorsed on Friday a resolution on a national programme for the prevention and suppression of crime for the period 2024-2028 and a resolution on a national programme for the prevention of domestic violence and violence against women.

Freedom Movement MP Pekošak resigns

Monika Pekošak, an MP for the senior coalition Freedom Movement, resigned on Friday, with the National Assembly already taking note of her move. She cited personal reasons. She is likely to be succeeded in parliament by Dimitrij Zadel, the former chairman of port operator Luka Koper.

MPs approve 3.36% indexation of public sector pay

The National Assembly passed with 63 votes in favour and none against changes to the public sector pay system, allowing for an indexation of salaries to inflation. Under an agreement with trade unions, public sector pay will increase by 3.36% in June.

KNOVS chair defends wire-tapping inquiry, coalition not convinced

The chair of parliament's commission for oversight of intelligence and security services (KNOVS) rejected on Friday accusations of abuse of the commission for access to data on an investigation involving senior New Slovenia (NSi) members. Janez Žakelj asserted KNOVS acted in line with the law, but coalition members were not convinced.

Lendava remembers 1944 mass deportation of Jews to Auschwitz

The city of Lendava marked on Friday the 80th anniversary of a mass deportation of Jews from the region with several events, including one at the Lendava Synagogue, which was attended by President Nataša Pirc Musar. While remembering the Holocaust victims, she also urged against today's radicalisation and anti-Semitism.
