Referendum Paved the Way for Independence

Ljubljana, 7 December - On 23 December 1990 Slovenians turned out in huge numbers to vote almost unanimously in favour of independence from Yugoslavia, triggering a cascade of events including a ten-day war with the Yugoslav army that led to the declaration of independence in June 1991.
